About the Artist: Choong Sup Lim is a Korean-American artist whose work bridges the cultural and philosophical traditions of Korea with the artistic landscape of New York. After earning his BFA from Seoul National University in 1964, Lim was influenced by the emerging Dansaekhwa movement, whose monochromatic aesthetic, material experimentation, and meditative approach continue to inform his practice.
Since settling in New York in 1973, Lim has explored themes of memory, identity, and place, drawing upon the contrast between his rural Korean upbringing and life in the United States. That same year, he received the prestigious Max Beckmann Memorial Scholarship to study at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, later earning an MFA from New York University in 1993.
Lim's work has been exhibited internationally at leading institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. He has also received numerous honors, including support from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.
